HairCut Day

Friday is the weekly holiday at Jhamtse Gatsal, and today was no exception, though the activities were pretty unique:  today was haircut day for all the children!  There were 2 barbers, and they were surprisingly speedy.  Can you imagine doing 25 haircuts in a row?  Since it was a rainy day, we set up the ‘barber shop’ in the protected porch area in front of the classrooms.  The kids were excited, waiting patiently for their turns, and then gathering to watch a Bhoti (Tibetan) movie on the school’s one TV when they were finished.

Jhamtse Gatsal, Tibetan for “Garden of Love and Compassion”, is a children’s community located in the Indian foothills of the Himalayas. Opened in 2006, it is currently school and home for 74 children from disadvantaged family situations in the nearby villages.
