Solar Power

The Solar Power is up!  Jhamtse Gatsal had 3 guests recently, who installed solar panels around the community, and set up the system so that we can have power when the electricity from the grid is not working.  We now have one panel on the roof of the family kitchen – no more eating in the dark!  There are a few panels on the administrative building – enough to power a computer or two and a few lights and recharge the portable LED lamps we now have.  There is one small panel on the first school building – just for powering a few lights at night for safety.  And finally we have a brand new big stand of panels next to the satellite dish at the uphill end of the school buildings, complete with a system of large batteries to store the power that they collect from the sun.

Jhamtse Gatsal, Tibetan for “Garden of Love and Compassion”, is a children’s community located in the Indian foothills of the Himalayas. Opened in 2006, it is currently school and home for 74 children from disadvantaged family situations in the nearby villages.
