Water Filtration Project

September 3, 2009 | Category: Improvements | Minoti S. (teacher)

As water is big problem at Jhamtse Gatsal,  the project of slow sand filtration has been started in August ’09 under the guidance of Jerry Z. All the children of fifth standard are also involved in the project. They are divided into three teams Morning Team, Noon Team, and Evening Team – so that they can observe the changes of the water tank daily. Till now we have found no big changes. All children and staff are very excited about it. We hope it will be successful and that there will be no more problems with drinking safe water.

I can think of two reasons that the algae cover may not have grown: (1) because we may not have left the system running and sand covered long enough (unlikely), or (2) that the water may not have sufficient biological impurities to promote the growth of algae. I beileve that we should test a water sample for coliform bacteria and other biologicals. The engineer at Lumla ought to be helpful to this end. If it tests fine, then it is drinkable.

Also I am interested to know if the water is coming out of the outlet more clear (less suspended particles) than it is going in. If so, we are working just fine.
